Mobile Version of ‘Dicey Dungeons’ Now in Open Beta on iOS and Android

Developer Terry Cavanagh is responsible for two of my all-time favorite games: Super Hexagon, which kicked off a wave of super hardcore twitchy arcade games, and VVVVVV which is basically the Citizen Kane of gravity-flipping platformers. Way back in May of 2018 Terry announced a new project called Dicey Dungeons which started out as a 7DRL game jam game. The plan was to flesh out the game jam version for a bit and then release the game on PC, with mobile and console ports to follow sometime after. Given my love for previous Terry Cavanagh games, I was pretty darn excited for Dicey Dungeons.

The PC version was originally supposed to launch before the end of 2018, but, well, game development is a fickle beast and it wasn’t until the summer of 2019 that it officially launched on Steam. In November of that year the plan was for the mobile and Nintendo Switch versions to arrive sometime in 2020. The Switch version did make that window, just barely, launching in December of 2020 and our own Shaun Musgrave really dug it in his short but sweet review from back then. Here’s the Switch trailer so you can get an idea of Dicey Dungeons in action.

Since the Switch version Dicey Dungeons has continued to receive new content and updates and it also launched on the Xbox platform late last year, and it’s even part of Game Pass if you’re a subscriber and want to give it a shot over there. However, to paraphrase Helen Lovejoy from The Simpsons, “Won’t somebody PLEASE think about the mobile gamers!?" Dicey Dungeons is a game that seems like an absolute perfect fit on mobile, and yet it’s taken the longest for it to arrive here. But our long national nightmare will soon be over, as some helpful members in our forum have relayed from the official Dicey Dungeon Discord server (the Dicecord), Terry is focused on finishing the mobile versions.

How finished? Well the mobile version is currently in testing and, at least for now, those test builds are open to the public. So if you want to give it a shot for yourself and provide some feedback to help make the mobile release of Dicey Dungeons be the best that it can be, head over to this mobile testing page to choose either iOS or Android and follow the short instructions to grab the latest build. So far impressions of the mobile version are that it is indeed the perfect platform for the game so hopefully it won’t be too much longer before we all finally have the full release of Dicey Dungeons on our mobile devices.
